Bird Pest Control

Bird pest control is one of our most requested services, particularly in urban areas. Birds on a building can go from nuisance to genuine problem faster than most people expect. Droppings accumulate, nesting material blocks gutters, and secondary infestations of fleas and bird mites follow.

Bird Pest Control Reviews

Once a colony establishes a roosting site, they return to it year after year. Removal alone won't stop that. That’s why we also offer bird proofing as a more effective long-term solution. We install physical deterrents, including netting, spikes, wire systems, and solar panel mesh, that prevent birds from landing or nesting on your property in the first place. We're BPCA-certified, work within the requirements of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and cover residential, commercial, and agricultural properties across Shropshire, North Wales, and the North West.

Why bird problems need a professional response

Bird droppings are acidic and corrosive to stonework, metalwork, and roofing materials over time. They're also a health hazard, carrying bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, and can trigger an environmental health visit if left unmanaged on commercial premises. Nesting material blocks gutters and drainage outlets, and once a colony is established, secondary infestations of fleas, textile beetles, and bird mites are common.

There's also a legal consideration. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, most wild birds, their active nests, and their eggs are protected. Removing an active nest without the appropriate licence is a criminal offence, carrying a fine of up to £5,000 per nest. Working with a licensed, BPCA-certified contractor means the work is carried out legally, with the right authorisations in place.

Bird Proofing Methods

The right method depends on the species involved, the structure, and the location. We'll assess your property first and recommend the most appropriate solution before any work starts.

Bird netting

Netting is one of the most versatile proofing methods, suitable for large open areas: roof voids, warehouse eaves, canopies, and courtyards. It creates a physical barrier that prevents birds from accessing a space entirely. We use UV-stabilised, knotted polythene netting: durable, and largely invisible from a distance when installed correctly.

Bird spikes

Stainless steel spike systems are the standard solution for ledges, parapets, window sills, and other flat or narrow surfaces where birds settle. The spikes don't harm birds; they make landing uncomfortable enough that the birds stop returning. Correctly installed and maintained, spike systems last for years with minimal upkeep.

Bird wire systems

Tensioned wire systems are a lower-profile alternative to spikes. Thin stainless steel wires are tensioned across landing surfaces at varying heights, preventing birds from settling without significantly altering the appearance of the structure. They're particularly suited to listed buildings, retail frontages, and heritage properties where aesthetics matter.

Fire gel and optical deterrents

Optical gel creates a visual and sensory effect that birds find aversive, and works well on ledges and railings where a near-invisible solution is needed. We also install audible deterrent systems where appropriate. These methods tend to work best as part of a broader proofing strategy rather than as a standalone solution.

Solar panel bird proofing

Solar panel bird proofing is a service we're being asked for more frequently as more households turn to solar power.

The warm gap beneath solar panels is exactly the kind of sheltered space pigeons look for when nesting. Once established under a panel, they're difficult to shift and will return to the same spot year after year. Nests and droppings can reduce panel effectiveness by up to 30% and cause damage that becomes costly to repair: to the panels themselves and to the roof structure beneath them.

There's also a warranty consideration worth being aware of: many solar panel manufacturers do not cover bird damage under warranty if adequate proofing wasn't in place. Fitting a proofing system at installation, or shortly after, is considerably cheaper than dealing with repairs or premature replacement later.

Our solar panel bird proofing service protects against all bird species and covers all common panel types and roof configurations. Common solutions include:

  • Mesh barriers and guards fitted around the panel perimeter
  • Angled sheeting to close the gap at the roof edge
  • Solar panel skirts (purpose-built for this application)
  • Bird spikes along the panel frame where appropriate

The right solution depends on your panel layout and roof type. We'll assess the installation before recommending an approach and provide a free, no-obligation quote.

Commercial Bird Proofing

Bird pressure on commercial buildings carries risks beyond the aesthetic. Droppings on food preparation areas, loading bays, or ventilation systems can lead to environmental health interventions, and in food production or storage environments, BRC/BRCGS audit failures. Pigeons nesting in roof voids above occupied spaces are also a consistent source of flea and bird mite infestations.

We provide commercial bird proofing programmes across the region, including survey, installation, and ongoing maintenance contracts for clients who need regular inspection records. If your site has specific compliance requirements (BRC, HACCP, or similar), let us know when you get in touch and we'll structure the service to fit.

Bird Pest Control FAQs

Do you cover all bird species?

We cover all species that commonly cause problems on UK properties, including pigeons, starlings, seagulls, sparrows, and jackdaws. The solution we recommend depends on the species involved, since different birds have different roosting and nesting habits.

Do you proof solar panels against birds?

Yes. Solar panel bird proofing is one of our most common requests. We fit mesh barriers, solar panel skirts, and other proofing systems around panel perimeters to prevent birds nesting underneath. See the solar panel section above for more detail.

Do you handle guano (bird dropping) clean-ups?

Yes, where a site survey shows it's needed. Guano clearance and sanitisation is included in the scope of works where required, and we'll include it in your quote. Clearing accumulated droppings before proofing is installed is important: residual scent markers will otherwise continue attracting birds back to the same spot.

Are bird-proofing systems humane?

Yes. The physical systems we install (netting, spikes, wire, solar panel mesh) prevent birds from accessing a space without causing them harm. We don't use methods that injure birds, and all our work is carried out in compliance with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Will netting or spikes damage my building?

We use non-invasive fixing methods where possible, particularly on older or listed buildings. All fixings and adhesives are appropriate to the substrate. We'll discuss the installation approach and any access requirements during the survey.
