BRC Pest Control

Whilst we're well known for our work tackling domestic pests, Complete Pest Control are also specialists in providing pest control services for businesses that need to satisfy the standards set out in the BRC's (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard for Food Safety.

What is the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety?

The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety is a list of requirements that over 20,000 businesses in 130 countries across the world that has been designed to protect consumers through safeguarding elements such as food products. According to the BRC, it "is accepted by 70% of the top 10 global retailers, 60% of the top 10 quick-service restaurants, and 50% of the top 25 manufacturers."

The BRC work closely with the wider industry to continuously evolve the framework and criteria within the Global Standard for Food Safety.

Pest Management for the Global Standard for Food Safety

Pest management has a dedicated section within the Global Standard for Food Safety. The 8th edition of the standard states the following:

"[t]he whole site shall have an effective preventive pest management programme in place to minimise the risk of infestation and resources shall be available to respond rapidly to any issues which occur to prevent risk to products."

The standard follows this with:

"The presence of any infestation on site shall be identified in pest management records and be part of an effective pest control programme to eliminate or manage the infestation such that it does not present a risk to products, raw materials, or packaging"

Becoming BRC Compliant

Ensuring that your retail business is compliant with BRC Standards is crucial. This can be achieved through using in house resource, however this can be extremely time consuming and isn't possible for many businesses.

If a business chooses to manage this themselves, the BRC state that they must meet the following requirements:

• Pest management operations are undertaken by trained and competent staff with sufficient
knowledge to select appropriate pest control chemicals and proofing methods and understand
the limitations of use, relevant to the biology of the pests associated with the site
• Staff undertaking pest control activities meet any legal requirements for training or registration
• Sufficient resources are available to respond to any infestation issues.
• There is ready access to specialist technical knowledge when required.
• Legislation governing the use of pest control products is understood and complied with
• Dedicated locked facilities are used for the storage of pesticides

Due to the above, many people opt to seek out a pest control contractor to assist with the implementation and ongoing management of a preventive pest control program.

Our BRC Certified Pest Control Service

It's worth noting that not all pest control companies are qualified to provide a service that meets the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety guidelines. Whilst all contractors will be able to deal with standard pest activity, this is very different to being able to provide a programme that minimises risk to product and complies with standards.

Our team of experienced pest control technicians are expertly trained in BRC standards (as well as members of the British Pest Control Association), and are able to offer:

  • Rigorous audit processes to inform inspection of premises & pest activity with detailed findings reports
  • Routine visits to sites
  • Proactive recommendations for pest management
  • Implementation of food safety systems
  • Consultation on potential pesticide materials and locations of pesticides
  • Consultation on the implementation of traps, such as insect light traps and pheromone traps
  • Field biologist inspections
  • Inspection of machinery
  • Bait solutions such as exterior bait stations and rodent baits - all informed by our tried and tested bait checklist

Our extensive experience in this field means that we're able to operate in different environments with ease. We pride ourselves on providing a quality service with fast response times, as well as acting as your partner, rather than just as a provider. We're also able to provide relevant certificates where requested.
